A Community Project

The Stone | Work | Space is a new venture that has grown from the involvement of the Portland Sculpture & Quarry Trust and the community itself…..

“A project growing from and with the community in shared vision where the arts connect with the landscape, skills and heritage of the Island.”

A place where the community and young people can work collaboratively with stone carvers, artists, designers, performers, scientists, architects and other researchers; with first hand experience of research and discovery that creates a wider interest in landscape and stone, our relationship to the environment and issues of climate change in the world today.

Using what we know to effect change

  • Understanding biodiversity within the environment, using waste stone for the creation of new micro-climates and habitats.
  • Teaching skills in stone carving, relief carving, letter cutting, architectural detail and direct carving / sculpture – where a range of traditional techniques are applied to new work to develop a high level of skill.
  • Bringing together the older generation with the new through projects that acknowledge the cultural landscape and traditional methods of quarrying and carving stone, where Portland’s heritage is renewed.
  • Creating a greater community involvement in design ideas for the future use of quarry landscapes – how they can be brought back into community use.

In 2009 PSQT was awarded a British Urban Regeneration Award (BURA) for Community Inspired Regenerationbura-award
